Can I use a 1U server without the grid?
My roommate and I want to buy a server and realized that an economically efficient is to buy a stackable 1U server (not a blade server, obviously) to use as a standalone server-type PC. Would this work? Do we need extra ventilation?
Almost all PC hardware can operate as a server. Some systems are optimized for it (eg Xeon processors), but of course old computers Desktop working style very well. Microsoft Server software is often more expensive than hardware, so that students like Linux. There is nothing wrong with using a rack-mount without the grid. You may have to raise it to provide adequate ventilation – check the air flow pattern.
