can you transfer a compaq deskpro into a tower case?
i have a compaq deskpro en p866,and am wondering can you transfer all the components into a tower case ,i know i can transfer the hard drive and optical drives but the pci cards are on a riser and the motherboard and psu could be a problem,as anyone had any experience in transfering a desktop into a tower,i would be gratefull for any answers
Did you measure the width and height of the old case and compare the measurements to the new case?? You know how the saying goes, “Measure twice, cut once!”.
As long as the riser is attached to the motherboard somehow that shouldn’t be a problem. If the riser is riveted to the old case you may have to remove that rivet(s) that hold it and modify the new case to accommodate it. If the motherboard is not removable you may just want to start from scratch and build a new computer. Salvage all the parts you can, mobos are not too expensive, but make sure that you get one that will accommodate the type of CPU and memory that you have. If you decide on a mobo, go to the manufacturers web page and get all the info you can. They usually have a section set up for CPU Support which will let you know what CPUs can be used with that mobo. Another way is to go to a local computer shop, not best buy or circuit city, but a “Mom and Pop” shop and see if they have any old Compaq’s laying around that you can use for parts. The power supply is probably riveted into the case, drill out the rivets, BE GENTLE this is a computer and not a piece of plywood. If you cannot get it out you’ll have to get one from HP for many $$$. If you decide to build one or replace the mobo get at least a 400 watt 19 amp power supply. That should be enough to power 2 HDDs, 2 optical drives, a floppy drive, and a 120mm case fan.
