Understanding why a "u" as important for servers and 19 "Racks?
Have you ever been asked to find storage for servers? Well, if you have you will know how frustrating it can be, especially with all the different terminology.
When you are looking for server storage, you get a mix of conflicting information, the racks are called 19 "rack-mount racks, width and depth in millimeters and is the mounting pole U.
A 19-inch rack is a standardized system for mounting various electronic equipment in a rack 19 " wide, the grid to take the name of the dimensions between the mounting rails at the front and back of the racks.
The racks can come in different depths: Depth 600 mm, 800 mm deep, 1000 mm wide and different depth: 600 mm wide and 800 mm wide. This depends entirely on what the computer is stored in the racks.
The heights of power system called "U", this is a measure that equals 44.45 mm or 1.75 ", for example, a server mount rack comes in 1U, 2U, 4U, so for example a 42U rack, in theory, up to 10 x 4U servers. However, you must allow air flow, and they do not want cabinet over heat, so that for each space used 4U 1U space is left blank, this can be closed with blanking plates – this is the industry standard. Some say the letter U is used as a standard for word Unit. The standard of the racks were created by the Electronic Industries Alliance and is known as EIA-310-D.
When we call 1U servers directly, are not exactly 1.75 inches (1U), are 1 / 32 of an inch smaller (typically 1.719 inches instead of 1.75 inches) and this is allowing a small tolerance around the cabinet, so the computer does not catch on another computer in the rack.
Where are these racks used? They are used in telecommunications applications to store all data networks and telephone systems to accommodate all ISPs web sites, the audio industry to accommodate the monitoring equipment and railways to store the signal relays.
A rack-mounting accessories are called mounting rails and run vertically from top to bottom in the rack, each lane is 5 / "wide with a separation between them of 17.75 inches giving the internal rack 8 total size of 19 inches.
You mount the equipment mounting rails, some racks have holes drilled to tap to take the bolt that came with the server, other nuts cage racks, these are nuts who help captive in a steel casing that fits well in square holes in the mounting rails.
If you go to the store a piece of electronic equipment for example, is 450 mm deep by 600 mm rack depth (this depth would be dictated by the deepest piece of equipment that is mounted), which is heavy, mounted grab bars, these range from the front rails in the rear rails in the rack and distribute the load evenly.
Refrigeration is essential if you plan to file a shelf capacity, there are several ways a cooling rack. First, if you are saving only the servers, will require cooling front to back, this is done in data centers with rooms with air conditioning and ventilating front and rear doors, these doors have fine slots or holes for air to be drawn into the cabinet and cool each server.
The second option is the air that blows in the racks of nothing on the floor and exhausted from the room, this is more expensive.
The last option is to have a fan or air conditioning unit installed in the ceiling recess, they come in different configurations to suit the application.
Some companies like to Bay (come together – this is accomplished with a kit of barking and consists of 4 screws) 2 racks, 1 store active equipment (servers) and 1 passive storage of equipment (hubs, routers, etc) if this is the case the land racks should be bonded, so if there is a short that nobody gets an electric shock.
